Travelling to Banyuwangi from Surabaya or other cities in Indonesia is always great idea, because in Banyuwangi, there are a lot of things to do e.g.  Trekking to the most amazing volcano of Ijen Crater/ Kawah Ijen, Snorkeling with baby shark in Bangsring underwater, visiting the Africa in Java of Baluran National Park, Surfing in Red Island Beach and Plengkung Beach, do adventurous trip into the jungle of Merubetiri National Park and watch the most amazing green turtle Sukamade Turtle Beach or doing city tour in the small town of Banyuwangi such a visiting the museum of Banyuwangi, British colonialism building and Osing village in Kemiren Village.

Anyway, there are 3 ways to reach Banyuwangi from Surabaya or Malang in East Java, Java Island. Firstly, you can do the overland tour by car which is too long and tiring. It will take about ± 9 hours depending on the traffic. This tour is totally not recommended for you.

Secondly, you can take a train from Surabaya or Malang. It will take about 7-8 hours but it depends on what kind of class you take. I will explain about train schedules and the class of the train on another article.

Thirdly, you can take a plane from Surabaya to Banyuwangi. It’s very convenient but you have to pay a little bit more for the airfare cost. The flight takes about 50 minutes only and there are 3 schedules every day, you can check the information below for the timetable and name of airline:
