WHAT IS IJEN PLATEAU?

Ijen Plateau is another name of Ijen Crater / Mount Ijen / Kawah Ijen, it’s an active volcano located in Banyuwangi Town, East Java. The volcano is a kind of lake volcano who has a beautiful turquoise color at the lake. It has also very high acidity at the lake, about 0,5 Ph, so it’s very dangerous but also beautiful.

Beside the beauty of the lake, there is also the natural phenomenon of Blue Fire a.k.a Blue Flame. It’s a blue flame that comes from the Sulphur mining area, but it only can be seen in the darkness and it’s also only 2 in the world, in Ethiopia and Ijen Plateau, Indonesia. So, it’s very special.

HOW TO GET TO IJEN PLATEAU?

To get here, you must stay overnight in Banyuwangi town. There are some hotels and homestay based on your budget. Then, we will start at about 00:30 am from Banyuwangi town. The Ijen Plateau Park is opened at 2 am in the morning. So we can leave at midnight from Banyuwangi Town.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The temperature at Ijen Plateau approximately is about +10 to +13 degrees during the sunrise time and it will be colder when it’s windy. We highly recommend you to think about your own comfort in advance.

The things that you should bring during the trip:

a pair of a good walkable shoes; trekking shoes, running shoes, hiking shoes
Warm clothes (long pants, scarf, jacket, some type of hoody)
a raincoat and wet tissues (you can buy during our stops at gas stations or minimart)
a cap or a hat
a small backpack to carry items up the volcano;
a personal ID card (or copy)
Tripod and more battery (when you need it)
Power bank

Day 1

Ijen plateau tour will be started at 00:30 am from your hotel in Banyuwangi area. Our guide and driver will meet you at your hotel where you are staying. It will take about an hour to the driver from Hotel in Banyuwangi to Platuding (start point before the trekking). Upon your arrival in Paltuding, you will be briefed by our guide about what should and shouldn’t do during the trekking to Ijen Plateau. Gas masks & torchlight will be prepared for free.

The trekking takes about 1 hour and a half to reach the top of Ijen Plateau. Besides the view from the top of Ijen Plateau, we can see the most outstanding natural phenomenon of Blue flame that comes naturally from the volcano. We should go down to the crater to see the blue flames closer. It’s dangerous but it’s worth it, you just need to listen to your guide and use proper shoes and be fit.

Around 4:30 am, we should go up from the crater because we will see the sunrise from the top of Ijen Plateau but when you feel tired, you can also see it from the crater when the sun rises and gives the best colors of the lake.

After enjoying the sunrise and the view of Ijen Plateau, our guide will invite you to go down back to Paltuding where our driver is waiting for you. On the way back to your hotel in Banyuwangi, you will be escorted to see Plantation of Coffee and Clove and when you are not tired, we can make a stop in the waterfall to relax for a while before heading back to your hotel.

Detailed Itinerary

Here is the completed detail of the tour:

00:30 AM (Javanese Time): Start driving to Paltuding (Start Point of the Trekking)
2:00 AM (Javanese Time): Trekking to Ijen Crater

The trekking will take about 1 – 2 hours, depending on your fitness. Upon your arrival at the top of the crater, you will be invited to see the most famous natural phenomenon of blue fire. It’s only 2 in the world, Ijen Crater, Indonesia, and Dallol Volcano, Ethiopia. But to see closer, you must go down into the crater of Ijen. It’s pretty dangerous, so if you feel doubt about going down, we suggest staying on the top while waiting for the sunrise.
